"Trust is built with consistency."
– Lincoln Chaffee

These resources and books on trust can help business leaders figure out where trust is breaking down and what to do about it.

In business and in life, it’s easy to treat trust as a fixed quantity, or in a binary setting – I trust this person, or I don’t. In reality, however, trust shifts often and dramatically based on our actions. Good business leaders spend time intentionally building trust on their teams and in their relationships.

From the Green Notebook is a treasure trove of good ideas and actionable insights. This episode can be life changing.

Charles Feltman, sits down with Joe and explains how trust is a competency that can be learned, improved, and practiced regularly. They also discuss Charles’ four assessment domains of trust (care, sincerity, reliability, and competence) and why understanding these domains is necessary for leaders to increase team cohesion and effectiveness.

We have long used Paul Zak’s research in our program design. This is a great read on how and why you need to build trust above all else and explains why business leaders cannot afford to neglect building trust.

“In my research I’ve found that building a culture of trust is what makes a meaningful difference. Employees in high-trust organizations are more productive, have more energy at work, collaborate better with their colleagues, and stay with their employers longer than people working at low-trust companies. They also suffer less chronic stress and are happier with their lives, and these factors fuel stronger performance.”

If you’re a leader, you should check this podcast out. This episode is a great place to start!

“What is trust, and why is it so easy to tear down?” In this episode, world leading expert on trust, Rachel Botsman, addresses the challenges of building and maintaining trust. Nicolai and Rachel explore the key moments that foster trust and the essential elements of building strong, enduring relationships in today’s digital world.

Article by X. Frei and Anne Morriss, from Harvard Business Review

X. Frei and Anne Morris build an alternate trust model to Feltman’s that may resonate more with you and your team.

“We think of trust as precious, and yet it’s the basis for almost everything we do as civilized people. Trust is the reason we’re willing to exchange our hard-earned paychecks for goods and services, pledge our lives to another person in marriage, cast a ballot for someone who will represent our interests. We rely on laws and contracts as safety nets, but even they are ultimately built on trust in the institutions that enforce them.”

Book, by Charles Feltman

The idea that trust and character are not inextricably linked was profound for me. This is an extremely useful book to put on your shelf.

The updated Thin Book of Trust offers a framework that supports trust building as a workplace competency. It is based on the idea that building trust is a competency, a set of skills that can be learned, improved, and practiced. It will help you continuously improve your ability to build and maintain trust with others. It can also help you create and contribute to a high-trust culture at work.
