Our experienced instructors

You get the best of both worlds

We search for leaders and professionals who are passionate about the power of time outside. Then we help them get certified to keep you safe outside.

Karen Miller

Karen is a Sr Technical Program Manager with a top Tech company and a mother of two teenagers. Karen developed her understanding of leadership from childhood dinner table discussions, nearly a decade as a Marine Corps officer, and over a decade leading technical projects and programs for Fortune 500 companies as well as governments. Karen finds her peace outdoors. Even though she maintains a schedule full of work, kids, and continuous learning, she always makes time for digging in the dirt (and occasionally successfully growing things), and trail running.

Daniel Johnson

Guide, facilitator, and coach. Daniel loves experiencing the outdoors and sharing those experiences. He is passionate about the mountains, rock climbing, and loves his dog, Nico. After graduating from the Naval Academy he led Sailors at sea and on land as a Navy pilot. He then transitioned into his passion for sharing the outdoors with others. Daniel is a certified rock climbing guide with the American Mountain Guide Association, former REI outdoor school instructor and a NOLS instructor where he takes students on 30 day expeditions into the wilderness.

Andy Moyer

Andy retired from the US Marine Corps as a Colonel with multiple command tours. He earned his Masters degree at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. He now lives in Spokane Washington where he spends ample time exploring the mountains. He is a conservationist.

Jude Restis

Jude spent six years in the US Marine Corps as a logistics officer before transitioning out of the military. He went on to study agile and lean process at Georgetown and work in project management as he racked up experience in the Pacific Northwest mountains. From long alpine rock climbing to skiing off the top of Mt Rainier, Jude is happiest pushing his limits on peaks. He currently works as a senior project manager at Starbucks.

Mikey Diehl

Born and raised in Eastern North Carolina, Mikey developed an appreciation for the beauty of nature from an early age. That appreciation matured to a love for the outdoors that has guided him ever since. After serving in the Navy around the globe, he lived overseas working in the maritime industry as a boat captain exploring the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia for six years. Most recently he has expanded his experiences by taking on the new challenge as an environmental educator and working with youth as part of several organizations.

Caroline Hernandez

Caroline is passionate about personal growth, self-reflection, and applying outdoor adventure to business leadership. After studying international relations at Stanford, Caroline worked at Bain & Company, building her personal business leadership toolkit and developing an understanding of different business leadership contexts through engagements with a variety of clients (from Series A startups to Fortune 100 companies). After taking a year to hike the California section of the PCT and work as a ski instructor, she went on to get her MBA at Kellogg where, among other things, she explored leadership and coaching.

Dawood Dhada

Dawood Dhada drives professional and personal development in the outdoors with a sense of curiosity and enchantment. He applies his certifications as a climbing guide, leave no trace trainer, and passion for ecology by connecting people to people, people to communities, and communities to the wild. From climbing in the Sierra, mountaineering in the Cascades, backpacking in Pecos wilderness, to canyoneering in Zion; Dawood finds true joy in outdoor spaces of all kinds. When he's not waving at rocks Dawood can be found painting, getting lost in music, and planning next season's objectives.

Skyler Holloway

Skyler feels just as comfortable in the boardroom as the backcountry having spent his early career in technology leading high-performing teams. He’s passionate about ultrarunning, backcountry skiing, backpacking, and international travel (30+ countries and counting!). He has completed the John Muir Trail, Wind River High Route, and off-trail in Gates of the Arctic National Park in Alaska. Skyler holds a Masters in Civil Engineering from Stanford University and sits on the Board of Directors for Goodie Two Shoes Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to helping under-served youth one new shoe at a time.

Mike Atcheson

Mike Atcheson brings diverse leadership experiences from careers in the Marine Corps and as an executive in the aerospace and defense industry. Most recently he was president of a $250M defense communications company. He has spent a significant portion of his career leading organizations through crises. Through these experiences he has an extensive "toolkit" of knowledge and skills to help turn around troubled organizations, and build high-performing, profitable teams. In his personal life he enjoys getting out on the trails and ultrarunning whenever possible. He has completed races up to the 100-mile distance.

Mike Jones

Mike graduated from the Naval Academy and served as a USMC communications officer before leaving active duty. He explores all over the US and runs an adventure gear website tendigitgrid.com as well as an adventure packing application (Don’t Forget The Spoon). He works as a senior team lead at Viasat in charge of airline satellite communications.

Eric Shaw

Before joining Cairn Leadership, Eric worked as a full-time mountain guide and outdoor educator. During his career, he has taught rock climbing, ice climbing, mountaineering, backcountry skiing, avalanche education, wilderness medicine, whitewater kayaking, swift water rescue and led groups on extended expeditions through some of the harshest environments on earth. He has guided 50-day ocean canoe and mountaineering expeditions in the Alaskan rainforest as well as trips to the summit of Denali. He believes deeply in the transformative power of nature and enjoys working with all types of people as they strive to expand their comfort zones and learn about themselves.

After leaving active duty she went to consult fortune 500 companies in leadership with the McChrystal Group and served in Marine Corps Special Operations as a reserve officer. She is currently pursuing her Physician’s Assistant degree.
